HARD WORK MAKE US AUTHENTIC

The mountains have made us different. They have shown us that altitude comes with its own rules and we have to follow them. Here are the fruits of our labour.

Andorra: from our mythical escudella to the most international dishes

Historically, Andorra’s traditional cuisine focused on the typical mountain fare of the Pyrenees, but in recent times it has evolved considerably. French and Spanish cuisine have always been present in Andorran cooking, with the north of the Principality being especially influenced by France and the south by Catalonia and its delicious escudella, the oldest documented soup dish in Europe. Thanks to a surge in the popularity of Italian food, Andorran dishes now show all kinds of international influences.

This means that now you can easily find an excellent selection of restaurants in which to enjoy culinary delights from practically everywhere in the world, but if you’re planning your next visit to Andorra, be sure to sample the following local products, which captivate everyone who comes to the Principality.

The best of typical Andorran cuisine

When it comes to the best, we have to start with our famous escudella. Not only is it one of the most traditional and most requested dishes, but also one of the most appetising winter warmers. It is made with beef, sausage, vegetables, noodles, rice and chickpeas. It is a very common winter dish in Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and Andorra. Other typical dishes you should try include trinxat, made with cabbage, potato, bacon, sausage, oil and salt, and carn d’olla, which is the meat used in the broth used in escudella. In fact, Andorra is known for its meat, including the sausages produced by Cal Jordi and Els Escaubells, which are used in the preparation of escudella and many other dishes.

We also recommend you try our famous wild boar and vegetable stew, paired, of course, with one of Andorra's excellent wines, and then over after-dinner conversation enjoy a family liqueur whose secrets have been handed down from generation to generation: Ratassia de la Carmeta, which is made with walnuts and medicinal herbs handpicked in the valleys of Andorra.

A great way to end a day with your partner or friends is to enjoy the great taste of a local Andorran beer.

Discover a wide variety of local products

Today, because we like to take care of ourselves so much, it is essential to eat a healthy, balanced diet. To help you achieve this, the quality products Andorra offers include, for example, the seasonal vegetables you’ll find in Cortal de Llumeneres, at its market or the Casa Folch farmhouse. Andorra’s fruits and vegetables are combined in restorative recipes to enjoy after a great day in the snow.

But if you’re just passing through the Principality, there are a range of quick options to complement your trip. Our recommendations in this regard include cheese from Casa Raubert and Andorran chocolate, whose fame has been secured by artisanal chocolateries such as Xocland, which you’ll find in La Massana. And if you like to spend as much time as possible in the cold and snow, Nectum fir cone syrup is what you need, since it is known to stave off skiers’ colds. It is made by Rebost del Padrí in accordance with a traditional recipe that has remained unchanged for centuries. You can also enjoy honey from Naturalis, Casa Folch and Autèntic, among other brands.

Andorra’s wide variety of products is the result of years of tradition and a passion for looking after both its own people and the many visitors that the Principality receives year after year.
