Alpine skiing and snowboarding
In addition to improving your high-altitude performance, alpine skiing and snowboarding allow you to appreciate the beauty of the mountains and snow while you train. They are a great way to relieve pre-season stress and put you in the right frame of mind for the sporting challenges ahead.
There are more than 300 km of slopes at Grandvalira Resorts, the largest ski area in the Pyrenees, with three resorts, Grandvalira, Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís at a moderate altitude of between 1,600 and 2,500 metres. Having played host to a number of FIS Alpine Ski World Cup races and other international competitions, they offer exceptional facilities for professional alpine skiing training.
There are designated areas for slalom, giant slalom and super G, as well as artificial ski slopes to ensure optimal training conditions throughout the season. The ski schools also offer you the experience of the Grandvalira Mountain Guides with whom you can tailor your training to both technique and speed, taking full advantage of the diversity of terrain available to you. Freestyle skiing
Andorra attracts elite freestylers from all over the world thanks to the excellent facilities and snow conditions found at Grandvalira Resorts. The Pal Arinsal and Grandvalira resorts are the place to be for fans of aerials and jumps.
There are four snow parks with areas specially designed for extreme freestyle skiing, ideal for professional athletes looking for constant challenges in the snow. Freestylers have the opportunity to showcase their skills in the different modules and obstacles designed to test their performance, and to really push their limits. You’ll find a large number of courses with obstacles such as ramps, a variety of jumps, boxes and rails, halfpipes and kickers, including the longest line of modules in the Pyrenees.
In addition, you’ll have a wide diversity of terrain at your disposal to practise these disciplines, including slopes with natural features such as cornices, steeps and areas of virgin snow. Professional riders can experience different types of terrain and hone their skills under a variety of conditions. With the help of specialised instructors and expert mountain guides, you can personalise your training to meet the goals you want to achieve in your altitude training in the snow.
Freeriding
Andorra has a wide diversity of off-piste areas to challenge professional freeriders, ranging from sweeping powder-covered slopes to steep couloirs and wooded areas that will put the skills of the best athletes to the test.
Ski resorts such as Grandvalira and Ordino Arcalís boast ski lifts that provide quick and easy access to explore vast swathes of remote, untouched areas. The versatility of the slopes, as well as the safety consciousness and professionalism of the certified guides and teams, will allow you to plan the perfect training programme for the season. You’ll be able to work on your turning technique, speed control, balance and navigation through wild, uneven terrain. In addition to honing your technique and skills, you’ll perfect your knowledge of challenging terrain under the best snow conditions and in absolute safety.
Ordino Arcalís also plays host to several international freeride events and competitions throughout the season, including the Freeride World Tour. Some of the world’s best freeriders push their skills to the limit as they compete with other athletes and enjoy the thrill of competition.
Ski mountaineering
Training for ski mountaineering in Andorra requires a combination of technical skills, knowledge of safety at high altitudes and good physical fitness. A wealth of wild trails and routes are available to professional ski mountaineers who want to tackle long distances over steeper and more technical terrain. Skimo on the mountainous slopes of Andorra is truly a physically demanding experience.
You’ll be able to plan rigorous training sessions on challenging off-piste areas at altitudes of 2,000 to 2,900 m on some of the country’s most iconic peaks, including Alt del Comapedrosa and Font Blanca. These off-piste climbs and descents will give you the chance to work on your turning technique, speed control and movement over uneven terrain, allowing you to hone your skiing skills and be as prepared as you can be for the season.
The Grandvalira, Naturland, Ordino Arcalís and Pal Arinsal resorts offer easy access with ski lifts and chairlifts up to marked trails set aside for skiers to enjoy this discipline in a safe and controlled manner. In addition to more than 40 routes on which you can improve both your speed and technique, you’ll have a full range of services tailored to the needs of professional athletes: mountain rescue services, information about weather and snow conditions, as well as shelters and rest areas on the routes. In addition, professional mountain guides are on hand to help you safely explore remote areas.
Cross-country skiing
Cross-country skiing professionals find Andorra to be the ideal location for training. La Rabassa - Naturland, the country’s cross-country skiing resort, boasts 15 km of trails of different lengths and difficulty levels, allowing professional skiers to train in a controlled and safe environment.
The resort has become a benchmark for this sport in this area of the Pyrenees and plays host to elite local and international skiers. What’s more, the Naturland ski school allows you to hone your skills and techniques in both the classic and skate skiing styles. The location of this sports complex in Canillo at more than 1,500 m above sea level is ideal for a pre-season training camp for professional skaters and players who want to prepare and hone their skills at altitude. What’s more, its spacious facilities allow you to combine your sports training with cross training. These spaces are ideal for integrating strength and mobility training exercises to reinforce your skills. It has a 25 m indoor heated swimming pool, a gym with a weights room, multipurpose halls and everything you need for all-round training.
